Newspapers

Argentina

Below we have included some newspapers that can be found in Argentina. We have included links to them where possible and also some type of additional background information for general interest. Almost all of the newspapers that we have in our list below are printed in Spanish unless otherwise stated.

There are two ways of saying newspaper in Spanish: Diario and Periódico.

We know we are missing quite a few newspapers so if you know of any, just let us know. Cheers!

Clarín - www.clarin.com - The most widely read newspaper in Argentina both in paper format and online. The online version boasts the title the most read Spanish language newspaper in the world.

La Nación - www.lanacion.com.ar - The main competitor to the above mentioned Clarin, this newspaper was founded in 1870.

La Capital - www.lacapital.com.ar - Founded in 1867, La Capital is Argentina's oldest newspaper still in publication. It's name came as a political statement of those lobbying to move the capital of the federal government to Rosario (Province of Santa Fe) where the newspaper is published. Interestingly Rosario was declared the capital three times by congress though this was vetoed by the president each time.

La Prensa - www.laprensa.com.ar - Founded in 1869, this newspaper became one of the most important of the country until it was confiscated by President Perón due to its opposing nature towards his presidency. It was given back to its original owners once Perón lost power though it never regained the same status since its original readers had gone to other papers.

La Razón - www.larazon.com - This newspaper that started in 1905 went bankrupt in 1999, was bought by Clarín and then converted into a tabloid that is now freely distributed in Train and Subway stations.

Página 12 - www.pagina12.com.ar - a politically left-wing newspaper based in Buenos Aires.

Ámbito Financiero - www.ambito.com - A financial newspaper that also as a version in English (both language versions can be seen online).

The Buenos Aires Herald - www.buenosairesherald.com - Founded in 1876 by a Scottish immigrant, this is an English language newspaper available in the Capital.

We will look into adding regional newspapers at a later date.
